Eoin O'Brien, close friend of Nevill Johnson and literary executor of his estate, has edited his writings in this volume for the first time. However, his autobiography, The Other Side of Six, published in 1983, while garnering excellent reviews, did not receive the acclaim it deserved. Eoin O'Brien, a close friend of Nevill Johnson and literary executor of his estate - who had previously co-authored (with Dickon Hall) Paint the Smell of Grass, a major work on the paintings of Nevill Johnson - has edited the artist's writings in in this volume, for the first time. They include The Other Side of Six, Tractatus Pudicis, a poetic dialogue on the human condition, the foreword to Dublin: The People's City, in which Nevill Johnson introduces his remarkable photographs of a city on the eve of an architectural and cultural decline in the early nineteen-fifties; twenty of these photographs are reproduced in the book. The collection concludes with The Wilby Journal, in which the artist expresses freely his technique of painting and his constant battle to overcome inertia, doubt and the vicissitudes of existence to achieve the one thing that mattered to him, the one thing that he believed he existed for - painting.
