1976 was a tumultuous year in Irish politics. Thundering Disgrace explores the extraordinary chain of events that unfolded over a matter of months, from the assassination of British Ambassador Christopher Ewart-Biggs, to the murder of Garda Michael Clerkin, and ultimately Ireland’s first presidential resignation. The book is divided into three parts. The first examines the political events that gripped Ireland following the assassination of Ambassador Ewart-Biggs, culminating in President Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh’s dramatic resignation from office. The second tells the story of Garda Michael Clerkin. Drawing on interviews with his family, personal memories, photographs and archival research, it preserves the life and legacy of a young Garda whose story has too often been overlooked. The final part explores the constitutional questions raised by the events of 1976. It considers the role of the President in Irish public life, the principle that the office should remain above day-to-day politics, and asks whether President Ó Dálaigh’s resignation was inevitable—or whether history might have taken a different course. Combining original research, family testimony and constitutional analysis, Thundering Disgrace offers a fresh perspective on one of the most remarkable periods in modern Irish history, fifty years after the events that changed the State forever.
