A small but unique booklet from the early 80s, “Tory’s Darkest Hour” details the struggle for the continued survival of the island and its native Irish speakers as observed by the author. Tory (Toraigh) is the most remotely inhabited part of Ireland, a windswept stoney area located 11km from the mainland. It is rich in historical buildings, Irish wildlife, has its own community of artists and even has a democratically elected King – a mostly ceremonial position similar in function to an ambassador.
