The Great Law of Birr, also known as the Cáin Adomnáin or the Law of Innocents (\(LexInnocentium\)), was a law proclaimed in 697 AD at the Synod of Birr in Ireland. It was the first known law in Western Europe to provide protection for non-combatants, such as women, children, and clerics, during times of conflict. Initiated by Adomnán of Iona, the law established specific protections for those who did not bear arms and mandated fines for violations.
