Michael O'Flanagan

Multi-award winning photographer Michael O’Flanagan from Ennis in County Clare is the author of the new, unique, 256 page photobook "Inis Oírr — The Jewel of the Aran Islands", which features 272 captivating photographs of Inis Oírr. He first visited Inis Oírr (the smallest of the Aran Islands) in 1969 as a student at Coláiste Laichtín – the Irish language summer school on Inis Oírr for secondary school students. Since then, he has been coming and going to the Aran Islands numerous times each year for both long and short-term stays. He has been photographing Inis Oirr and its people since the early 1970s. His photographic archive on the three Aran Islands (Inis Mór, Inis Meáin and Inis Oírr), which comprises in excess of 20,000 images in both film and digital formats, is perhaps the most extensive one in existence. Michael O'Flanagan was awarded a Ph.D. in Law by the University of Galway for his doctoral research on “Taking and Publishing Photographs: The Legal Rights and Restrictions”. Prior to undertaking his Ph.D., he graduated from the University of Limerick with a Bachelor of Laws (Hons.), a Bachelor of Business Studies (specialising in Marketing Management) and a Diploma in Business Studies (specialising in Personnel Management). He was also awarded a Graduateship of the Marketing Institute of Ireland. He was awarded a Licentiateship by the Irish Professional Photographers’ & Videographers’ Association (I.P.P.V.A.) in 2010 and while he was a member of that Association he won 72 awards (5 Gold, 45 Silver, 21 Bronze Awards and a Certificate of Excellence Award) for his photographic work at its Annual Photographer of the Year Awards.
