Margaret McKenna

Address: Co. Cavan

Art has always been a part of Margaret McKenna's life. Since she could first hold a pencil, she wanted to draw, and her childhood was spent filling as many drawing books and blank pieces of paper that she could obtain. On leaving school, she spent four years in Art college and then entered the world of animation where she had the pleasure of working on many well-known children’s films including “The land before time”, “All dogs go to Heaven” and the Oscar nominated "An American Tail" (see IMDb website for more details). She also became more interested in painting, using oils, pastels and watercolours, moving on to acrylics which she enjoyed due to their quick drying properties. Moving from Dublin in the late ‘90s she reared my family on the border of three counties and two provinces, just outside Virginia, County Cavan. The rolling hills and Lakeland forests has been a recurring theme in her paintings where she endeavours to relay the atmosphere; the sense of what makes that particular place special. The area is also steeped in legend and heritage, which appeals to her appreciation of Irish mythology, and indeed it had been the subject of many of her drawings in earlier years. The place where she now lives reignited that passion for our shared ancient past.
