Born in Cologne, Germany in 1936, Herbert Remmel came to Ireland with 400 other German children in 1946 as part of what was then known as Operation Shamrock. The aim of the operation was to alleviate the suffering of children in postwar Germany, where hunger was very prevalent. Herbert was taken in by the Nally family of Ballinlough in County Mayo. In his memoirs, he remembers his years in the west of Ireland as some of the best years of his life.
