Helen Cullen

Helen Cullen is an Irish novelist. She has published two novels: The Lost Letters of William Woolf (2018) and The Truth Must Dazzle Gradually (2021), with Penguin Random House in the UK and Ireland, HarperCollins in North America, and in translation to numerous foreign markets. Her debut novel also garnered Helen a Best Newcomer nomination at the Irish Book Awards. Helen holds a B.A. in Communications, an M.A. in Theatre Studies, an M.A. in English Literature, and a PhD in Creative and Critical Writing from the University of East Anglia. She is a Reader in Creative Writing at Brunel University, a literary critic for The Irish Times, a writer for The Sunday Times Magazine, and a BBC broadcasting contributor. Her upcoming House of Gonne duology will reimagine the lives of two extraordinary figures from Irish history: Iseult Gonne, a child genius destined to become a muse to W.B. Yeats, and her mother, the Irish revolutionary Maud Gonne. Iseult takes place on a single day in 1953, as she walks across Dublin towards her mother's deathbed, confronting a lifetime shaped by love, loss, and the shadow of Maud's legend. The companion novel, Maud, will turn to her mother, exploring her revolutionary fervour, myth-making, and the private complexities behind her public iconography.
